Miracles of Modern Knee Surgery

Four surgeries later, this 76-yr-old is back on her feet

After four joint replacement surgeries, the septuagenarian is not only able to walk straight but also with confidence.

Vadodara : Life came to a standstill for Smt. Chandrakantaben Oza, of Ahmedabad after an arthritis attack. A hairline fracture in her hipbone made things worse. And no doctors in her home city would risk operating her knee as a major drawback was her age. Doctors felt that it might be difficult to endure the pain following a joint replacement operation at 76.

However, after four joint replacement surgeries, the septuagenarian is not only able to walk straight but also with confidence. "I had been waiting to see this happy smile on her face. She endured a lot of pain for the last five years as no medicine could give her complete relief. A surgery was never on our mind considering her age, the cost and to some extent a misconception that good treatment is not available in India, "said her husband Shri Jaswantrai Oza.

The entire procedure of replacing the knee and hip joints was spread over a span of 15 days.

"It was a challenge for us to perform joint replacement surgeries in a series and that too on a patient as old as 76. But now, we are convinced that our decision to go ahead with the procedure was right as the patient is recovering at a good pace, "says knee surgeon Dr. Bharat Mody.

" I had very little hope of recovery. I had consulted many doctors in Ahmedabad who prescribed allopathic medicines and physiotherapy. But the pain was unbearable and my joints would become stiff. Life now has become much easier after the surgery," beams Smt. Chandrakantaben.
